BOB
BALDWIN IS STANDING TALL
Narada Jazz Debut, Standing Tall, Hits Streets September 17 NEW YORK – Keyboardist Bob Baldwin goes beyond his signature urban funk jazz style and steps into what he calls neo-jazz on his Narada Jazz debut STANDING TALL, (CD: 72438-12575-2-4), which hits record stores across America on September 17. The result is a vibrant, meaningful 11-compilation CD filled not only with great grooves, but also uplifting, memorable works of art. STANDING TALL jumped out of the airplay box with a strong first week, signing in as the #1 most added on the Smoothjazz.com chart and #2 most added at Urban AC. She’s Single, Ready to Mingle tied as the 4th most added tune at Smooth Jazz. About his latest venture and, from the numbers, hot neo-jazz style, Baldwin says, “I like to keep my finger on the pulse of new trends, like neo-soul. Jill Scott, D’Angelo, Eryka Badu and so many others really have something great going on. What I’m doing on the new album is taking inspiration from them and putting it into an instrumental jazz framework.” With Baldwin’s natural ability to weave life’s experience into his music while creating inventive harmonies, he doesn’t really need to fill his releases with high-powered guest appearances. However, when you have friends like Roy Ayers, Chieli Minucci, Phil Perry, Kim Waters, Will Downing and Marion Meadows , Tito Puente alumni Ray Vega, Brazilian Percussion Cafe', you might as well as include them in the mix. Vibes master Roy Ayers joins Bob on the modern classic Everybody Loves the Sunshine, which Ayers composed and recorded in the 70s and continues to bring fans to their feet when he plays it today. Vocalist Will Downing also lends a hand to Sunshine, while another vocalist friend, Phil Perry, does the honors on Too Late. Saxophonist Marion Meadows, also a frequent collaborator, joins Baldwin on It’s A New Day. Rounding out the CD are Stand Tall, The Way She Looked (At Me), Neo-Jazz, the Latinesque See You in Miami, Let’s Fly Away, Mr. Sample (a salute to piano giant Joe Sample) and an instrumental version of Too Late . “Like everyone else, the events in September 2001 moved my soul. I wanted to write music that said ‘be proud of who you are, stand up for what you believe and do what you love.’ Art does imitate life and vice versa, so live your life to the fullest... today,” Bob urges. At age four, Bob Baldwin discovered his ability of perfect pitch with the help of his father, a jazz pianist who worked with Art Davis, Keter Betts, Max Roach and others. He studied classical and jazz repertoire, but his intriguing harmonies were no doubt honed due to his wide range of inspiration that included Oscar Peterson, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis. While studying accounting, business and broadcasting in college, he never strayed far from his first love. Baldwin didn’t let that business acumen go to waste. He independently produced his CD (distributed through the powerful Virgin/EMI Network) Bobbaldwin.com , which sold an impressive 50,000 units. He also used his business skills to develop and negotiate his recording deal with Narada Jazz. Bob Baldwin will have his hands way full with making, performing and sharing great music for years to come. For performances and stations playing the CD, Click here |

Keyboardist Bob
Baldwin Says
'Standing Tall' Is Response To 9/11 by Janine Coveney - 7/28/2002 Keyboardist Bob Baldwin will release his first album for the Narada label on September 10. Titled Standing Tall, the new set bows almost a year to the day after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Baldwin, who now lives
in Atlanta, says he was in New York recording
when two of the hijacked planes brought down the World Trade Center
towers. Originally raised in the New York suburb of Mount Vernon,
Baldwin says he wanted
to dedicate his next album to the spirit of Americans. His recent album
American Spirit, which contains patriotic and spiritual standards,
addresses
that issue directly, but Standing Tall has a spiritual message as well.
Baldwin told us: "And then when 9/11 hit and just how people were affected in New York as well as out of New York, I just wanted to send a message back out to the people, even though this is a horrific tragedy and there's thousands of people we haven't even found at this point, I just wanted to give people a word of encouragement to just stand tall." Standing Tall features guest appearances by vibraphonist Roy Ayers, guitarist Chieli Minucci, singers Phil Perry and Will Downing, and saxophonists Marion Meadows and Kim Waters. |

BIOGRAPHY Written
by Anne Dickens
Narada Records Release Date: 09/10 Bob Baldwin is a modern renaissance man — from beginning his own savvy record company to producing his singularly grooving jazz keys, it seems when Baldwin puts his heart and soul into something, the sky's the limit. At age four in Mount Vernon, New York, Baldwin discovered his ability of perfect pitch with the help of his father, a distinguished jazz pianist in his own right who had performed with Art Davis, Keter Betts, Max Roach, and other jazz greats. Studying both classical and jazz repertoire, Baldwin's natural musical ability shined brightly. Inspired by Oscar Peterson, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Miles Davis, Baldwin pursued his love for developing intriguing harmonies and has since made them an integral part of his sound. "People expect me now to re-harmonize, says Baldwin. I guess after a while, they’ve gotten used to it". Baldwin later attended Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa., majoring in accounting, business, and broadcasting. Yet, he heeded his true calling on the weekends, hitting the road and performing at prestigious venues such as New York's Beacon Theatre, The St. Lucia Jazz Festival, The Essence Music Festival, and JVC Jazz Festivals in both New York and Newport, R.I. By 1986, Baldwin formed a group with a NY guitarist Al Orlo, The Bob Baldwin/Al Orlo Project, which proved to be a superb testing ground for his compositions. Several members of the project went on as sidemen for the popular jazz and pop bands Spyro Gyra, Michel Camilo, Paul Simon, Luther Vandross, Average White Band, The Temptations, Chick Corea, and others. That same year, the group performed at the New York's legendary Bottom Line, opening for trumpeter Tom Browne. That later led to a relationship with producer Danny Weiss and production effort on Malaco Records in 1988 which featured saxophonist Nelson Rangell (I’VE GOT A LONG WAY TO GO). Encouraged by family and fans, Baldwin submitted his Malaco release to the Sony Innovators Award, hosted by Roberta Flack, winning the award in 1989. "'Killing Me Softly With His Song', that's what l said when I heard the tape that Bob submitted to the Sony Innovators Program. He's an inspired musician who fuses jazz, R&B and pop in a truly original way," Flack announced. The honor led Baldwin to a deal with Atlantic Jazz, where he recorded REJOICE (1990) and REFLECTIONS OF LOVE (1992), co-produced by Weiss, the latter peaking at #7 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart. Baldwin was actually on several spots on the chart that year, having composed and produced material for Grover Washington's album NEXT EXIT as well as on saxophonist Marion Meadow's KEEP IT RIGHT THERE. For the next several years, Baldwin honed his sound and compositions, releasing a number of albums including 1996's CITY SKETCHES I and COOL BREEZE (1997), both of which scored high marks among critics and jazz enthusiasts around the country. In 2000, Baldwin released his break-out album, BOBBALDWIN.COM. On the charts for over 24 weeks, the album features the awesome talents of Gerald Albright, Marion Meadows, Armsted Christian, Dean James, Eric Essix and Tom Browne, to name a few. Baldwin also paid a loving tribute to one of his childhood role models Grover Washington, Jr. on the tune Funkin' For Jamaica. Throughout the album, Baldwin created a brilliant fusion of technology and full-ahead-steam performances, darting in out of floating, hypnotic atmospheres, employing along the way percussive, avant-garde synth lines, wah-wah guitars, and an occasionally smooth soprano line from guest artist Marion Meadows. On his Narada Jazz debut, STANDING TALL, Baldwin takes his funk jazz style one step further to what he calls "neo-jazz". "I like to keep my finger on the pulse of new trends, like neo-soul. Jill Scott, D'Angelo and so many others really have something great going on. What I'm doing on the new album is taking inspiration from them and putting it into a instrumental jazz framework." One of Baldwin's guests, Roy Ayers, laid down the hip hop prototype back in the 1970s and is the "Icon Man" among the crowd. The two team up on Ayers' modern classic Everybody Loves The Sunshine and, as Baldwin mentions, "this old school favorite was great then and now which shows us how brilliant Ayers is. What an honor to record it with the man himself!" Baldwin is also joined by longtime friend Phil Perry on Too Late. "We met at The Jazz Explosion three years ago and we discovered right away that we're on the same page. "Too Late" and it’s arrangement has a youthful vibe that immediately appeals to Baldwin. "Also, with drummer Little John Roberts behind us on See You In Miami, It's A New Day (All Day), and The Way She Looked at Me”, the NY Keyboardist adds. The live drumming adds to the looseness of the CD. “In my opinion, he's the most important drummer in this format in the last 5 years." Two other frequent collaborators, vocalist Will Downing (Everybody Loves The Sunshine) and Marion Meadows (All Day) join Baldwin on his latest venture. "I really enjoy bringing in such talented artists who may not have worked together before. The producer in me loves mixing their distinctive qualities with mine and writing songs to showcase everyone's gifts." Indeed, Baldwin has finely-tuned his craft on STANDING TALL. A particular standout is Mr. Sample. Penned several years ago, Baldwin wrote the song as a tribute to Joe Sample after dialoguing with him personally. "I grew up listening to Joe Sample & The Crusaders. We met while I was writing for Strictly Jazz Magazine and I was to interview him for an hour before a gig. Well, four hours passed and we were still talking about music and ideas! His inspiration has been with me ever since. I wonder if he ever made his gig? " Each of the songs on STANDING TALL has its own distinctive feel — from the Latinesque See You In Miami to the Maurice White inspired vocals on She's Single, Ready To Mingle, Baldwin's music speaks volumes. Above all shines Baldwin's commitment to his art and the people who listen to it. "Like everyone else, the events in September, 2001 moved my soul. I wanted to write music that said, 'be proud of who you are, (Stand up for what you believe, especially if it's right) and do what you love. Art does imitate life, and vice versa. Live your life to the fullest."
