Tropea has written for and played with major recording artists from around the world.  In his long career, his contributions to other artist’s successes have been numerous, including his solo work with Deodato, (2001 theme), projects with Laura Nyro, Harry Chapin (Cat’s in the Cradle), Paul Simon (Fifty Ways), Alice Cooper (Goes to Hell), Eric Clapton (Journey Man), Dr. John, and many others. The John Tropea band features another great legend on Bass, the amazing Anthony Jackson, one of the prolific musicians who has shared the studios with greats like Quincy Jones, Michel Camilo, Paul Simon and many others. Trumpeter Lou Marini has shared the stages of many NY TV Studio bandstands.  This will be a great night of music.

Hendrik Meurkens, a virtuoso on both the chromatic harmonica and the vibraphone, is the most important jazz harmonica player since Toots Thielemans. German-born but now based in New York, Meurkens' recordings and performances garner worldwide acclaim because the transcendent beauty of his music has universal appeal. A two-mallet player in the tradition of Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson, Hendrik Meurkens was en-route to being an instantly recognizable vibraphonist when he heard Toots Thielemans. Inspired by the sound of Thielemans' harmonica, he taught himself the difficult-to-master instrument.

Hendrik Meurkens' other life-changing musical experience was his introduction to samba and bossa nova. He was so moved by Brazilian music that after perfecting his unique musical voice at Berklee, as a vibraphone major, he moved to Rio in the early 80s to totally immerse himself in music and culture of Brazil.  More about this great artist can be found by clicking here.

In the late 1980's, this Pianist bursted on the scene with the Hush Music family and formed a musical alliance with labelmates Najee and Freddie Jackson and has been an Urban Jazz fixture since. In the 1990's, Bugnon posted major sales with CD's such as "107 Degrees in The Shade". Since the beginning, Bugnon has toured the world with his funky piano licks. He makes Upstate NY his home.

Bugnon graced the stage at the Bergen PAC on 3/11/06 tributing Angela Bofill. He will coming back with full band, so don't miss this great performance. A Trumpet favorite, we anticipate a funky good time as he re-visits Trumpets.  Reserve early.

Flautist Ragan Whiteside

When she was studying classical music in College, she fell upon  an old Herbie Hancock record and became intrigued with the improvisational styles of Hancock, while simultaneously cutting her writing and production skills deep in the studio.  Mt. Vernon's Ragan Whiteside has been catching the ears of Raef Gomez at the Groove Boutique regularly and has been getting raves from Deb Rath at CD101.9.  Mt. Vernon, NY's own will make her soulfully-jazzy debut at Trumpets and one should not miss such an event.  Check out her latest CD, which is posted on her website, which was produced by Dennis Johnson and our own Bob Baldwin, which will be released nationwide later this year.

"Sexy, elegant, and undeniably funky, Ragan's ultra hip take on contemporary jazz is irresistible.  Her vibe meshes perfectly with the sound of The Groove Boutique!"
-Rafe Gomez, CD101.9 FM.

Functuation

Marion Meadows
When Marion Meadows blows into Trumpets, he brings his East Coast funk with him and his band.  A Phoenix, Az. native, Meadows' latest CD has been blasting across radio stations nationwide, with two top-10 hits in 2005 with "Sweet Grapes" and "Suede".   His unique soprano flavors have graced records for Norman Conners, WIll Downing, Pieces of a Dream. Last year, he filled out the Sax-Pack Trio along with Jeff Kashwa and  Kim Waters.

What's next for this West Virginia native who has defected West where he treads on average 100 miles weekly on the bike trails of Arizona?  You'll have to come to Trumpets and see for yourself. Oddly enough, Whiteside and Meadows share the same 12/7 birthday.

Meadows graced the stage at the Bergen PAC on 3/11/06 tributing Angela Bofill. He will coming back with full band, so don't miss this great performance.

Saxophonist Dave MannGuitarist Gil Parris

When you cut your teeth within the NYC music club scene, one develops their own sound quickly. Westchester, NY guitarist Gil Parris has recorded on the esteemed RCA record label in the late 1990's and has teamed up with Saxophonist/Writer Dave Mann on his latest effort.  Mann, a Michigan native, who lives in the heart of the city, stays busy on the NYC session scene, producing commercials and smooth jazz tracks.

On occasion,  Mann has experienced top - 10 proportions, having written and produced music for Nelson Rangell.  Parris' self-produced sophmore effort is a cleanly-executed recording produced in upstate New York, co-produced by Mann.  Check out the sounds of Gil Parris, of whom Guitar Magazine says "Shines through as the brightest star in the genre since Larry Carlton.

Saxophonist Nelson Rangell

Many people rave about the fiery sound of this wonderful saxophonist, but until you hear him on piccolo flute, you have not heard a thing. Nelson Rangell is one of the prolific saxophonists of this genre. By the time he strolls on the stage here at Trumpets, look for his latest CD, his 2nd on Koch Records.

Some of his classic records on the GRP have featured writings by Dave Mann, but his classic alto sound is one of the best in the business.  Look for a wonderful time by all at Trumpets as we welcome Nelson Rangell from the mile-high state of Colorado.

The Royal Scam is the world's premier Steely Dan tribute band. Playing more than 40 of Steely Dan's masterpieces, The Royal Scam has helped to keep the compositions of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the spirit of rock/jazz, and the enthusiasm of fine musicianship alive in small clubs and concert venues in the NY metropolitan area.

Jazz, R&B, Latin, and Pop are among the major elements which make up Steely Dan's music. All of the many musicians who work with us from time to time have played most of these various styles and have contributed some very memorable musical moments for the band. We are grateful that we have worked with so many talented performers. In March of 1996, The Royal Scam was featured in a Star Ledger article about tribute bands and we have appeared on the cover of Steppin' Out Magazine. We have also appeared on The Jersey Spotlight television show and a live radio broadcast on WJDN. We have made appearances at the China Club, Kenny's Castaways, The Bitter End, Club Bené, The Rock and Roll Cafe, Essex County Summer Concert Series, Stephen's Talk House, and a host of other clubs which feature classic rock or tribute shows.

Enrico Granafei

This man is multi-faceted, moonlighting as a club owner at this wonderful club, but his juices really flow when you let him romance you with the sultry harmonica and guitar playing.

Harmonica virtuoso, classical guitarist, singer, songwriter, arranger, composer Enrico Granafei has a long history of musical experience which encompasses both Classical Music and Jazz.Enrico received a degree in classical guitar from the Conservatory of l'Aquila in Italy in 1976.

His artistic career started in Rome where he soon became known in the musical community. In 1978 Enrico moved to Germany where he began to perform and to teach in two different "Musikschulen". In the early 80's, after returning to Italy, Enrico started to broaden his horizons by discovering Jazz through the harmonica. Following in the tradition of the legendary Toots Thielemans, he began to explore new possibilities for the harmonica, an instrument too often associated solely with Rock and Blues. Besides playing in the best jazz clubs in Italy during that period, Enrico performed regularly on national television where he was a member of the Pippo Caruso orchestra. His love for Jazz led him to New York City, the world capital of Jazz, where he soon started to perform in local jazz clubs, including The Blue Note, Birdland, Visiones, Angry Squire, and the Bottom Line.

He has recorded with Eddie Gomez, Eliot Zigmund. Marc Johnson, Adam Nussbaum, Ted Curson, Nnena Freelon (Concord records) and many others.

Enrico's latest accomplishment is his work on Hands-Free-Chromatic Harmonica. The revolutionary instrument invented by Vern Smith allows him to play Chromatic Harmonica and Guitar at the same time, something that nobody has ever done before in Jazz. Close your eyes and you will hear two or three musicians but in fact it's only one! Enrico is one of the most respected players of the Chromatic Harmonica in the world today and continues to cultivate an audience for the instrument through his international performances.

Bob Baldwin is a world-traveled musician. In 2000, he ventured down to South Africa with Marion Meadows and scouted out musicians to play on their gig there. In 2003, he recorded his record in Brazil, titled "Brazil Chill", where he worked with Torquato Mariano, Leo Gandelman, the group Azimuth. His latest efforts blends the funky N.Y. sound he enjoys sharing along with his experiences in Brazil.

Baldwin has been in the trenches for many years, working with Noel Pointer, Grover Washington, the aforementioned Meadows, Pieces of the Dream, Phil Perry, Chuck Loeb and many others.  In 1981, when he was pursuing his degree in Bus. Ad, he was minoring in Broadcasting and came home to intern with Pat Prescott, Sergio Dean and the late Frankie Crocker. He's developing a new format called "New Urban Jazz", which blends a unique blend of Urban and Jazz flavors, some of which he airs on his show in Bermuda. Look for his show to air online within weeks.

His latest CD, "All In a Day's Work", debuted top 10 - Billboard Contemporary Jazz. On this day, all roads will lead to Trumpets, as we are happy to have Pianist/Arranger and Radio host Bob Baldwin to perform. He's also been assisting us in developing the lineup for the months of March and April. Come support this wonderful musician and preservationist of this great genre of jazz.
